When it comes time to buy or sell a house, having a trusted realtor by your side will be an invaluable asset to have. Your real estate professional will have the industry knowledge and experience to save you time, money and headache. These characteristics of a great realtor will help you to pick the best professional to have on by your side.

Things to Look for in a Great Realtor:

1- They are proactive.

You want an agent who is ready and willing to jump on an opportunity. Much of the real estate business is about timing. You do not want someone who is going to drag their heels in getting things done.

2- They have Strong Knowledge of the Local Area.

You need a realtor who thoroughly understands the region you are purchasing in. They will be better qualified to pull comparables and price your house accordingly. Above all, they will understand the best marketing efforts for the area.  They will also have a network of real estate professionals surrounding them to connect with regarding your home.

3- Hardworking

Real estate is not an easy business in any facet. Your realtor should be someone who stands up to adversity and rises above it. Choose a realtor that tackles challenges with a positive attitude and is ready to affect change.

Red Flags About a Realtor:

  • Real estate is your agent’s part time side gig. This doesn’t mean that the agent isn’t professional, or doesn’t know what they are doing. However, if they have another commitment that is their main focus and priority, you may not get the best achieved results with this agent.
  • The agent charges a lower commission. Many agents use this as a way to appeal to more clients. While this may seem like a good way to save money, it may actually end up costing you. If your realtor is working for a lower commission they may not work as hard to get your house sold or find you the home you want.
  • The agent has poor negotiation skills. Finding a house to buy, or finders buyers for your house is the easier part of the process. You want to be assured that you have a realtor who knows how to negotiate. You want someone who is tenacious yet tactful to help create a contract that will be fair but provide you with the biggest financial payoff.

Questions to Ask A Prospective Realtor:

  • What geographical areas do you cover?
  • What types of properties do you usually sell?
  • How many homes have you sold this year?
  • What price range do you usually work within?
  • Do you have preferred lenders you work with?
  • Can you provide me with references?
  • What are you advertising and marketing plans for selling a house?
  • How often will we communicate with one another?
  • Do you have a website or blog?

Thoroughly interviewing a realtor before entering into business with them will ensure that you have a quality professional on your side. Use their expertise to guide you throughout the process and have you going to the closing table with less headache and more financial payoff.
